If you are interested in joining the Cosmology group at Berkeley, please also consider applying to the Chamberlain Fellowship at Berkeley Lab. It will be advertised on the AAS Job Register.
We also encourage you to apply to the Hubble/Einstein, NSF, Brinson and any other fellowships you may be eligible for and to take them to Berkeley.
General Information
BCCP brings together researchers at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prospective postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to apply to opportunities at both institutions: BCCP operates as one group, and researchers collaborate across the broader Berkeley cosmology community regardless of their formal host institution.
UC Berkeley postdoctoral opportunities
UC Berkeley offers several routes for postdoctoral research in cosmology. The BCCP Fellowship is normally advertised each year through the AAS Job Register. Other opportunities include the Miller Research Fellowship, which has an early nomination deadline, and the Berkeley Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship. Berkeley Lab postdoctoral opportunities
Berkeley Lab opportunities include the Owen Chamberlain Fellowship, annual cosmology postdoctoral searches advertised through the AAS Job Register, and the Alvarez Fellowship for research involving computational modeling, simulations, high-performance computing, and advanced data analysis. Additional information is available through Berkeley Lab’s Postdoc Resources and the Berkeley Lab Postdoc Association.
External postdoctoral fellowships
BCCP members regularly host fellows supported by the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program, the NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships, and the Brinson Prize Fellowship. We encourage you to apply to these excellent opportunities and take them to Berkeley. Please get in touch with a senior BCCP member for further guidance if you are considering an application.
Foreign fellowships
BCCP also welcomes postdoctoral researchers supported by fellowships from outside the United States. Relevant programs include:
- Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (Canada)
- SNSF Postdoc.Mobility (Switzerland)
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships (European Union)
Eligibility and host-institution requirements vary by program. Prospective applicants should contact one or more senior BCCP members well before the relevant deadline to discuss research fit, eligibility, and sponsorship.
Graduate students
Prospective PhD students should apply to the UC Berkeley graduate program in Physics or Astronomy. Current and admitted Berkeley students may contact senior BCCP members to discuss possible research projects. Eligible students are encouraged to consider the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship. Post-qualifying-exam graduate students at US institutions can apply to conduct research at Berkeley Lab for 3 to 12 months through the DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research program.
Undergraduate students
Undergraduate research opportunities are available through UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, Berkeley Lab’s SULI and BLUM programs, and the N3AS undergraduate research program. The UC Berkeley Physics and Astronomy departments also maintain guidance on undergraduate research and funding opportunities.
